  • A field study plot beside a large fallen log in a dry grassy area. Several small conifer seedlings are planted at measured distances from the log and marked with colored survey flags on thin wire stakes. Blue flags are placed closer to the foreground, while pink flags extend along the opposite side of the log. A wooden measuring stick lies diagonally across the plot, and a digital caliper rests on the ground near the bottom edge of the image. The fallen log has rough, peeling bark and extends from the foreground into the background along the right side of the image. Dry grasses and scattered vegetation surround the site.
